Film historian, programmer and researcher Xavier García Bardón opens up the vaults of the Brussels’ CINEMATEK paper archive to highlight some lesser known aspects of the tumultuous history of EXPRMNTL. One important activity that continued in the intervals between editions, was the correspondence with filmmakers. In between 1967 and 1974, many of them applied for free film stock. On the basis of their proposals, Ledoux would donate Agfa-film, on the condition that the new work would then première at the next festival edition. Some filmmakers tested the limits of the festival by submitting ‘films without film’ (Eric Andersen, Tony Conrad), or by sabotaging the manifestation out of ideological protest against the Vietnam war (Harun Farocki, Holger Meins). And then there are notorious examples of titles that never made it through the selection process, such as Marcel Broodthaers’ Le Corbeau et le Renard. The graphic look of EXPRMNTL, designed by the likes of Corneille Hannoset and Alechinsky, also deserves special attention of course. A presentation in collaboration with CINEMATEK, Brussels.
EXPRMNTL is the most important event that has ever been organised for experimental cinema. This amazing festival (five editions between 1949 and 1974), organized in Knokke-le-Zoute in an empty casino between Christmas and New Year, was a key place for experimental film in the critical period of its development, and actually almost the only meeting point for avant-garde filmmakers for years, the place where experimental movements connected.

The pure necessity /Die reine Notwendigkeit 2016, by David Claerbout
Rather than telling the story of a little boy abandoned, far from civilization, in the middle of a jungle and in the midst of its fauna, Claerbout’s film loop culminates anew every hour on the hour – like a clock – in the final scene of the original animated film. It is the moment in which a girl comes to the edge of the jungle to fetch water.
The one-hour loop turns the sentimental and comical story about dancing, singing, and trumpet-playing jungle animals of the animated movie classic The Jungle book of 1967 into a film that has dispensed all ‘humanization’ of the animals and portrays them instead in a manner befitting their species.
Despite the fact that The pure necessity completely eliminates the narrative of the original, it holds a fascination of its own. The ambiguity and incongruity of the protagonists, on whom a human ego was first imposed, only to be deprived of it again in this adaptation, serve to charge the completely eventless film narrative with a suggestive tension virtually impossible to put a finger on.
