Eggs + Taboo zine collection | Masha Krasnova-Shabaeva

Eggs is a story by Masha Krasnova-Shabaeva that explores motherhood, identity, and the idea of home. The project consists of a zine published by PrintRoom and a series of prints. At its center is a character living in a mysterious forest. Eggs follows her journey while introducing other figures around her: queer bodies, scarred bodies, imperfect bodies, and bodies in transformation. Through her voice, we learn about the place she inhabits, the creatures around her, and the small obsession that keeps her moving forward.

Eggs reflects on the comic-strip format. The term “comic strip” often suggests something simple or even silly, and Masha deliberately embraces this. There is both beauty and horror in a simple story (like a folk tale, for example) where meaning emerges because so much is left open to interpretation.

Like many of Masha’s projects, this work is connected to her country of origin. In December 2022, a new law in Russia banned all “positive or neutral portrayals” of queer and trans people. Since 2024, LGBTQ+ activism has been outlawed and classified as a criminal offence, carrying potential prison sentences. Some of Masha’s recent work responds directly to these laws, highlighting the absurdity of turning real people’s lives into a taboo. She focuses on the relationship between images, representation, taboos, and censorship, examining how these forces shape artistic expression.

Alongside the new publication and prints, Masha will present her private Taboo zine collection, featuring works by fellow artists, WdKA illustration students, and selections from PrintRoom’s own zine archive.

Masha Krasnova-Shabaeva is a visual artist and illustrator, born in Ufa (RU) and now based in Rotterdam (NL). Masha describes what she does as a crossover of fine art and illustration. She worked both as an editorial, commercial illustrator for publishing houses around the world, and as an independent artist for galleries and museums. Since 2019 she has been teaching illustration at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam.

Reading My Panties 02: Queer Pillow Talk | Lu Lin

Reading My Panties is a publishing practice by Lu Lin, focused on the subject of clothing, creating a space for showcasing the ways in which our underwear connects us with our bodies and identities. The project highlights discussions on femininity and how it structures our daily lives, and playfully aims to experiment with multiple ways of story-telling by using and remaking the most mundane item: the underpants. In many Asian cultures, talking about or showing one’s panties is considered taboo, unchaste, and rebellious.

At PrintRoom Lu Lin will present the publication Reading My Panties 02: Queer Pillow Talk next to taking over the space with a panty-installation, hanging underwear on clotheslines, inspired by women protesting in Myanmar.

While the first issue, A Collective Manifesto, confronted the unspoken politics of underwear, this second issue expands the conversation around the topic and centres queer’s panties. Queer Pillow Talk, addresses the intersection of femininity, feminism, and queerness through the lens of panties. It repositions panties—not merely as hidden garments, but as a substantial site of struggle, memory, reflection and transformation.

The project has taken shape as a publication with two issues so far, as well as in various workshops, reading sessions, performances and installations.

Lu Lin (1992) is a self-publisher and socially engaged artist born in China, currently living and working in Arnhem (NL). As a self-publisher in the field, she utilizes artistic approaches to deconstruct the complexity of safe spaces and explore their socio-political and cultural factors in relation to marginalization, drawing on intersectionality, feminism, and queerness.
Through the involvement of social practices, her works are motivated by the alienation experienced in this era of fluidity, showcasing how different aspects of everyday life contribute to identity formation and discrimination. Her work takes various forms, including publishing practices, video essays, workshops, installations, and performances, all of which emphasize intimacy and collectivity. To maintain a strong connection with people, she applies her research into pedagogical and participatory practices within marginalized communities, aiming to foster a more engaging and thoughtful society.

Friday 28 November 2025: Bargaining Beyond Rest

Join us for an evening of conversations, readings, and shared inquiry!

~ Nocturnalities: Bargaining Beyond Rest by Andrea Knezović and Agata Bar

~ The Mountain, The Mountain by Moosje Goosen

18:30 – 21:00
Talks start at 19:00

PrintRoom
Van Speykstraat 121, Rotterdam

Nocturnalities: Bargaining Beyond Rest by Andrea Knezović and Agata Bar delves into the politics of rest within the European art world and aims to contextualize themes of sleep, exhaustion, anxiety, and precarity within the realms of cultural labour, knowledge production, and cultural institutional operations.

What is the value of rest in the age of late capitalism? And who claims ownership over certainty in a reality that seems so precarious, where the non-stop pace of life often demands more than the traditional hours of daylight can offer? We are increasingly pushed into collective insomnia by the grips of the global economy, technological expansion, and information extractivism. Under the premise of tailored living and comfort-economy, clear constructs of work performance are removed and workspaces are hybridized, while at the same time our internal clocks are blurring the boundaries between autonomy and control, rest and productivity, automation and life.

~This presentation will be moderated by Natasha Rijkhoff.

The Mountain, The Mountain by Moosje M. Goosen is an edited version of a sequence of fragments written on postcards between May 2024 and February 2025, posted to the space of Manifold Books in Amsterdam. The writing of these postcards took place during The Sphinx’s Riddle, a year-long program of exhibitions and reading sessions organized by Maartje Fliervoet from Manifold Books, and coincided with the physical rehabilitation of the author, following an induced coma and extended time in hospital in the first months of 2024, due to a COVID infection. It combines (memories of) readings, most notably that of Thomas Mann’s Magic Mountain, with (memories of) illness and hospitalization.

During the event, the original set of postcards will be presented alongside the poster publication of The Mountain, The Mountain, published by Good Neighbour Books and designed by Dongyoung Lee. Moosje, who won’t be present due to health restrictions, will read fragments from the text together with Maartje Fliervoet, who was the receiver of these postcards. The presentation of the postcards will remain on view at PrintRoom until the end of December.

7 November – 20 December: S P I N O R A M A, an exhibition on book spines

S P I N O R A M A

By Aslak Gurholt and Fraser Muggeridge

7 November – 20 December
Opening: Friday 7 November, 18:30–21:30
Talk by Aslak Gurholt and Fraser Muggeridge at 19:00
PrintRoom’s Living Archive Space, Schietbaanstraat 17, Rotterdam

We’re excited to present S P I N O R A M A, the first exhibition devoted entirely to the book spine—a crucial yet often overlooked element of book design. You’re warmly invited to join us for the spine-shivering opening, featuring a talk between the curators Aslak Gurholt and Fraser Muggeridge. Drinks and snacks will be served!

The spine is the reader’s first encounter with a book when displayed on a bookshelf. Traditionally, not much imagination goes into its design—usually following the standard sequence of author, title, and publisher from top to bottom (or bottom to top).

S P I N O R A M A focuses on books that treat the spine as an integral part of the overall cover design or concept. Whether through the type of content, spatial arrangement, or the way the book is bound, these spines serve as the literal and conceptual backbone of every book.

Featuring over 100 spines from diverse genres, the exhibition explores how designers have turned this functional surface into a site of expression and visual identity. Referencing figures such as Jost Hochuli and Jan Tschichold, the display reveals spines that form images, convey unexpected messages, and challenge the conventions of book design.

This exhibition will take place at PrintRoom’s Living Archive space where the Spinorama collection will be supplemented with books from PrintRoom’s collection of artist books.
PrintRoom invites artists and designers to propose new books for Spinorama and our own Living Collection, please get in touch if you have a book we should consider!

A (printed) catalogue of the collection can be purchased at PrintRoom.

S P I N O R A M A has previously been exhibited at London Centre for Book Arts (5 July–17 August 2024), Gent Art Book Fair (3 – 4 May 2025) and einBuch.haus in Berlin (16 June – 5 July 2025) and Vienna Art Book Fair (17 – 19 October 2025).

Friday 17 and 24 October, 15:00 – 17:00: Pro-Posters Print Café

Saturday 4 October: Let’s Make it Last!

You’re invited for a bubbly afternoon with Yuliya Gwilym and Brigid Lefevre

*Fermentation Workshop *Tasting * Story Sharing *

Fermentation is always a collaboration — never just one thing. It’s the plant, the salt, the air, the microorganisms — and the makers. While fermentation happens naturally, humans have embraced and adapted it in countless ways, evolving alongside these foods.

It carries stories: Of survival in hard times, of smells and flavours that bring us back to other times and places, of knowledge passed down through generations. There are ancient stories of making, and scientific stories that illuminate the invisible worlds we engage with — both equally beautiful and vital.

In this workshop, we’ll step into this world through readings from kitchens around the globe — stories collected for our upcoming book on fermentation and memory — and through stories seen through the lens of the microscope.

Fermentation is both incredibly simple and wildly complex. Let’s make and imagine together.

We’ll grate, chop, and mix vegetables in large bowls — everyone massaging in the salt together. Then each participant can customise their jar with herbs and spices to take home and care for.

During the workshop will reflect through sharing, drawing and/or writing.

What memories arise when we gather to preserve food together?
What do we feel when massaging cabbage collectively, engaging in bacterial exchange?
How do we imagine bacteria — our invisible companions, inside and out?

Brigid Lefevre has been fermenting professionally as well as teaching the art of fermentation in schools, colleges, and for private groups for almost 20 years. Her journey has been deeply rooted in a love for small-scale organic agriculture and creating a living landscape around food production.

Yuliya Gwilym is an artist, award winning illustrator and children’s author. Her work is mostly narrative in nature and often explores themes of childhood, memories and nostalgia.

More information about the Books Are Bridges Publishing Summit:

The Books Are Bridges Art Book Fest is an annual event organised within the scope of the Books Are Bridges Publishing Summit. It was initiated as a small-scale gathering for and with artist publishers and experts in this field.

Through an in-depth exchange spread over three days, the programme includes presentations, workshops, shared meals, and more. By initiating this gathering, PrintRoom intends to contribute to the support system and network that encompasses publishing practices, initiatives, and spaces. Simply put, this meeting is an occasion to spend qualitative time together, connecting genuinely through showing, telling, making, eating, and conversing around a shared passion for artist publishing.

This year’s edition is dedicated to archives for artist publications. Together with kindred spirits
from different generations and cultural backgrounds, we take time to intimately explore our collections, discuss our vernacular archiving methods, and reflect on the questions often accompanying our archival practices: How may the archive remain faithful to the intention of a widespread publication while preserving its fragile content? How do we give access to our archives? How can we support archives that are endangered by political crisis or those operating under a fragile economy whose longevity is no longer guaranteed? Special guests in this programme are Mela Dávila Freire (DE/ES), Sam Kim /Common Imprint (DE/KR),  Hlib Velyhorskyi / Biblioteka Kyiv (UK/UA), Maike Aden (FR), Marc Fischer/ Public Collectors (US), Antoine Lefebvre / Artzines & Objet Papier /Generative Artzines (FR).

The Books are Bridges Summit was first initiated in 2022 by Karin de Jong of PrintRoom and Elenor Vonne Brown of The Nose (and previously X Marks the Bökship, UK). Each programme is developed in close collaboration with the participants. Previous editions were respectively focused on ‘collective practices and art book fairs’ (2022), ‘publishing platforms and networks of care’ (2023), and ‘spaces for artist publication’ (2024).

Herbarium Riso
Herbarium Riso is a public archive and research project on risography and stencil printed matters like (artists’) publications, records, zines, ephemera or color charts based in Berlin.

»The Herbarium Riso confronts us with the roots of the self-publishing. The urge for self-enactment, visibility, accessibility and democratization of art and information. But also the low and no budgets, and the need for accessible machines and processes. And how limitations (e. g. space) leads to the consequence to use the stencil printer as the choice of reproduction.

For us, the Herbarium Riso is a political act that is linked to a clear mission. The collection manifests the intention to bring together aesthetic, artistic and political publications, but also to give vulnerable positions a place of presence and endurance.« — Gloria Glitzer

Herbarium Riso will be on show until 7 June 2025

This is the first presentation of the series “Vernacular Archives” on “archives of artist publishing” at PrintRoom, in the frame of the Books Are Bridges Publishing Summit. This year’s edition will transport its audience through various archives focusing on artist publications. Together with kindred spirits, we want to intimately explore our collections, discuss our vernacular archiving methods, and reflect on the questions often accompanying our archival practices.

Stick(er) it to the man
A Radical Form of Publishing and the (re)claiming of public space

Stickers in the urban landscape engage with public spaces in a direct manner. Public space is integral to people’s ability to express and claim the right to the city, “not merely a right of access to what already exists, but a right to change it after our heart’s desire” (David Harvey, 2003). Stickers are ideal for this task, they are cheap to make, they stick to any surface and are hard to clean. Many protest stickers are attempts to persuade, to bring attention to urgent themes, or are a form of territorial space-claiming. Whatever the goal, stickers participate in public debates, transforming the public space into a bulletin board.

Beneath the Surface
In a world where noise and silence perpetuate cycles of oppression and ecological destruction, Beneath the Surface invites us to pause, listen deeply, and use our voices to reclaim buried stories. This composition presents a radical approach to knowledge production, emphasizing embodied resistance as a crucial means of emancipation. Luïza Luz guides us in a deep listening session.

Saturday 10th May

Wednesday 16 April, Bookpresentation Life with Fifi, you’re invited!

flyer by Dongyoung Lee

Wednesday 16th April
16.00 – 18.00

Life with Fifi
Fifi, a Pomeranian-Chihuahua mix, came into the lives of Angelica and Kris a few years ago. Taking care of a puppy is taking responsibility for building their world and letting the small animal transform yours. As her human caretakers, we created Fifi’s world with toys, cuddles, rules, snacks, and walks in the park. In return, she transformed our world by bringing our community together and reminding us of the importance of caring for one another. In this book, we narrate a day in the life of Fifi, from the moment she wakes up to when she falls asleep at night. Along the way, we share how we connect with her, how we see her understanding her surroundings and what she has taught us about companionship.

10:00 – 16:00 (A perfect day) Workshop: come make, write, illustrate & print a paper about the daily

The daily newspapers talk of everything except the daily. Georges Perec, Approach of What?, 1973

This workshop invites you to find words to describe what you do every day. You will print using a Freinet letterpress developed especially for children. The outcome will be an illustrated paper in a small edition. The workshop is meant for children who can read as well as for adults. There is room for 10 to 12 participants.
Sign up by email info@printroom.org or pass by PrintRoom shortly before April 5th.

17:00-19:00 Freinet Techniques Book presentation

Since Élise and Célestin Freinet brought type and a printing press into their classroom in 1924, thousands of school magazines were written, typeset and printed by children learning to read and write with the ‘Freinet techniques.’ Making these magazines gave form

to a visual language spreading an emancipatory vision on education through an international network of schools. The book Freinet Techniques assembles reproductions from these school magazines with their translations. They are accompanied by essays by

graphic designer César Roger, artist Marie Preston and editor Paul Gangloff.

Paul Gangloff works as graphic designer and teaches at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. He has made books on subjects such as punkzines (Punk: Periodical Collection, 2012), the future of the book (Our Form of Book, 2016) and the Lettrist concept of hypergraphy (Rules of Hypergraphy, 2014).
